Rider profile:

When did you start riding Motorcycles?
I started in 1984 on a CB200.

How did you get into doing distance riding?
In Toronto (where I grew up) the closest good roads were in Pennsylvania. I also began riding to BMW rallies; it became a challenge to ride to distant rallies for the weekend. Then I started one day, 1000 mile, competitive rallies like Nevada 1100 and Utah 1088.

Do you belong to any organizations or clubs?
I belong to some of the FJR, Sport Touring and CBR1100 lists on the Web and I still have close friends in the London and Ontario BMW clubs. As well as keeping up with other long distance riders with the Ldrider and Ibdone mail lists and the Iron Butt Association.

What is your biggest accomplishment?
Hmmmm hard to say. Coming to within 3 minutes of winning the 1991 Iron Butt; Riding from Alabama to Prudhoe Bay to Key West and back to Alabama in the 2001 Iron Butt; Leading the 1997 Iron Butt at every checkpoint until the last day and coming in second; Entering every Iron Butt since 1989; Organizing and putting on the Thousand Mile Blackfly 1600 rally in Northern Ontario and Quebec.

What do you hope to get out of riding, what does it give to you?
I love to travel; it gives me a sense of accomplishment. This type of riding really shrinks the map of North America. Riding outside and in the elements gives a sense of travel that an enclosed car can’t.

What would you tell other riders who wish to "go the distance"?
Start slowly, but keep going. Set a realistic goal and accomplish it. Then extend your goal. The fastest way to get to the other side of a continent is to keep your wheels turning. Time spent at the gas station should be as efficient as possible. Learn your own limitations and stay within them. The Iron Butt web site has an extensive database of information for the novice Long Distance rider.

Ventura Profile:

When did you start using Ventura Motorcycle Accessories?
In 1999 after riding up to Bristolcone Pine Forest and worrying about my headlight on the dirt roads and realizing that rocks and debris that were being kicked up all the time.

What made you choose Ventura Products?
The ease of use and quality of manufacture.

How has Ventura products helped you along the way?
It protected the headlight of the CBR several times (that I noticed) on the 500 mile gravel road to the Arctic Ocean in Alaska.

What is your favorite feature about Ventura Products?
The fact that it is simply attached with Velcro. I can easily take it off at night or to wash it and it give a high degree of protection to the headlight.
